FINANCIAL ENGINES® AND NORTHERN TRUST SEE STRONG DEMAND FOR INVESTMENT ADVICE

NTRC and Financial Engines Launch and Develop Unique Communications Strategies for Three New Sponsors

PALO ALTO, Calif., July 11, 2001 – In a continued effort to provide high-quality investment advice to the workplace, Financial Engines today announced that it has contracted with three more Northern Trust Retirement Consulting (NTRC) plan sponsors. Dow Corning Corporation, Ericsson Inc. and Tomkins Industries, Inc. join the ranks of more than 500 employers in providing access to Financial Engines' investment advisory service to their employees. With the addition of the more than 20,000 employees that these three companies represent, NTRC moves closer to its goal of providing access to Financial Engines' advice to a quarter of a million participants in 2001.

Financial Engines and NTRC worked closely with each of the companies to develop unique communications programs that would most effectively reach each company's participant base.

  • Dow Corning Corporation - Dow Corning decided to use electronic methods that were supplemented with paper-based materials to communicate the new benefit to their employees. Financial Engines and NTRC created co-branded emails, as well as posters and fliers to kick-off the service at Dow Corning. "The response has been exceptional," says Dennis Hurley, Manager of Pension Investments, Dow Corning. "Within a few weeks we achieved an adoption rate of more than 40%."
  • Ericsson Inc. - Having an employee base that is very technology savvy, Ericsson Inc. asked Financial Engines to develop a purely online-based communications program. Financial Engines designed a three page multi-media demo that introduces the service to Ericsson Inc. employees, as well as sent co-branded emails.
  • Tomkins Industries, Inc. - The workforce at Tomkins is mainly in manufacturing with limited Internet access at work. Financial Engines, therefore, developed a paper-based outreach strategy to communicate the new benefit to Tomkins' employees that included postcards, custom welcome kits and posters.

"Financial Engines continues to lead the way in making its service accessible to a broad range of employees and developing communications strategies that will reach them," says Dennis Sain, CEO, Northern Trust Retirement Consulting. "Financial Engines' communication team is very experienced at creating effective awareness campaigns and together with NTRC works with each employer to utilize the most effective communication vehicles possible."

"Sponsors who get excited about providing advice as a benefit and take an active role in promoting it turn that enthusiasm into adoption and usage within their organizations -- which translates into a 3 to 1 increase in adoption rate success," says Brian Samuels, Vice President, Workplace Advisory Services, Financial Engines. "We work closely with Northern Trust to help sponsors to determine their adoption and usage goals and then together build a communications program that will ensure they see the usage rates that they expect."
